Coming soon….

28 Nov

I can’t believe the last post was way back in May! It does make sense though since that was exactly when I started working on the largest project of my career thus far and G has gotten to the nuts and bolts of his project. While I’m appreciating the promotion and large raise that soon followed, I’m not enjoying the lack of personal life! However, it should ease up drastically just in time for the holidays. G and I will be heading to Detroit and Roanoke for Christmas and can’t wait to see everyone!! It’s been too long!

Between now and then I hope to catch up on posts to share our summer adventures! We had visitors and experienced new places. Until then, a couple miscellaneous pictures from the last 6 months…

Our Real Life Superheroes

9 May

I’ve been wanting to share this for a while now and no, I’m not making any of this up. In Seattle, a 24-year old man by the name of Ben Foder, who goes by the pseudonym Phoenix Jones, leads a ten-member citizen crime-prevention patrol group called Rain City Superhero Movement. Other superheros in the group are Purple Reign, Red Dragon, Midnight Jack, Karma, SkyMan, Caballero, etc. I know what you’re thinking, do they wear costumes? Of course they do!

Phoenix Jones

I couldn’t find images of all ten members but I stole a few off the internet to give you a taste of what I’m talking about. Phoenix Jones’ costume consists of a Dragon Skin bulletproof vest and stab plating (stab proof vest), as well as equipment including a stun baton, pepper spray, handcuffs, and a first aid kit.  Yes, I’m still not making any of this up. I mean, what’s a more

Phoenix Jones and Purple Reign

reliable source than Wikipedia. Actually though, they have been on the news multiple times since we’ve moved here. Most recent being during the May Day protests and rioting that took place in downtown Seattle.According to the Wikipedia page, Jones has been shot and stabbed in the line of duty but came away unharmed.

Rain City Superheroes

Apparently Seattle is not the only city to be graced with the presence of real life superheroes. Others cities I found include Harrisburg, San Diego, New York, Washington DC, Milwaukee, Clearwater and Atlanta. I also found that multiple other countries like Britain, Australia, Norway, and France have also experienced these real life superheroes. I have never heard of anything like this before moving. I’d like to thank the great Northwest for opening our eyes to this strange movement. I say, keep up the great work Rain City Superheroes!

Mini Vacation in San Fran

30 Apr
The Golden Gate Bridge
The first left coast city we’ve had the pleasure of discovering together is San Francisco and we loved it! It’s bigger than Seattle but there were quite a few similarities, specifically the crazy weather. Another city where it can go from warm and sunny to cold, cloudy and windy in seconds. One major difference from Seattle is the development of the waterfront. Pier after pier with restaurants, seafood stands, shops, tours, and people. Lots of people. We stayed in Fisherman’s Wharf and were able to walk to almost everything but there seemed to be a great public transportation system. We did take the bus over to the Golden Gate bridge and went on a Duck tour of the city to see areas farther away from our hotel like Chinatown, Union Square, and South Beach where the Giant’s stadium is located. Unfortunately we were one week too early for Giant’s Opening Day. That would have been fun!

AT&T Park from the Bay on our Duck tour

We even saw a pair of naval ships that were built-in Norfolk, VA. After the Duck tour we went on the Alcatraz tour. This was a great tour. Learned a lot about its history and famous inmates. We did the audio tour and walked through most of the prison. We wanted to do the night tour because we had heard that it was better but it was creepy enough being in there during the day. These tours book weeks, sometimes months, in advance so plan ahead!

George in the recreation area

This was creepy, they outlined the knives so they knew if one was missing.

While we were on the tour the sun decided to come out. There are some breathtaking views in this city!

Were we singing?! Who knows...

We did a little bar hopping later that night. Found a bar with really cool patrons and bartenders so we ended up going there 2 nights in a row. This guy in the picture was Rocket Bob. He was a retired trolley car driver. I couldn’t really understand him but the guys that worked in the bar loved him. I think he even had a cot upstairs that he sometimes crashed on. One bartender told us Rocket Bob never had an accident as a driver but he did let a rider drive and that person derailed the trolley. These guys had some great stories.

Finally good sausage gravy!

I did eat some fantastic Dungeness crab and fish n’ chips while in San Fran. George was able to find good sausage gravy and biscuits which was a first for the left coast. He’s sampled quite a few in Seattle over the last 10 months. Two weeks after we got back from San Fran, he found a place here that lives up to his standards.

We didn’t spend too much time outside of Fisherman’s Wharf and South Beach. There is a Macy’s in Union Square that  I really wanted to go to. Our tour guide said it has one whole floor that’s just women’s shoes. I’m sad I didn’t get to check that out.

The ultimate brownie sundae

We did swing by Ghirardelli Square to indulge in a couple heavenly sundaes. The place was packed but totally worth it! Someone had salad for dinner so he’d have plenty of room for the brownie sundae.

It was a great mini vacation. Hopefully we’ll get to experience another left coast city this May. Portland, Victoria BC, and Vancouver BC are just a few on our list.

NOLA and the Sugar Bowl

21 Feb
I’ve been working on this post for a month now.  Seeing that today is Fat Tuesday I think it’s only fitting to finally finish it! I’m really wishing we could be back down there to enjoy the Mardi Gras festivities, especially the costumes and parades, but one thing we learned is EVERY day in New Orleans is a party.
Winner, winner!

Now that I got that out-of-the-way, time to share our trip to New Orleans back in the beginning of January. We absolutely LOVED it down there! That city is dirty and smelly but that doesn’t seem to slow anyone down. It lives up to its party town reputation.

Beignet heaven!

The food was amazing! Besides Bourbon St., jazz, and hurricane Katrina, the food is what NOLA is known for and we sampled everything on our “must try” list. Gumbo, jambalaya, red beans & rice, muffaletta, beignets (delicious!), and Po’boys. We were not disappointed. In fact, I think I found a second favorite food type. Nothing will ever top Italian food for me and I can’t wait until we experience authentic Italian food in Italy. But I move on. I took pictures of almost everything we tried but I won’t bore you with a ton of food. Just know it’s all worth a try.

The muffaletta was probably my favorite. It’s basically an italian sandwich on steroids. I only ordered a half sandwich and didn’t finish it. We didn’t go to any expensive, fancy restaurants like NOLA by Emeril. We found that the dives had just as good if not better food. If you haven’t gotten it yet, I’ll say it another way. Eat your heart out in this City.

My favorite - Muffaletta

The day we arrived in NOLA it was a gorgeous 70 degrees but we didn’t see that temperature again until the day we left. In fact, the night of the game was down right cold. This did not stop us from having a great time down on Bourbon Street.

While drinking and partying happens all over town, Bourbon Street was its own beast. We may of had too much fun, if that’s possible. We had the biggest beers EVER! They had to have been a gallon each and yes, I’m proud to say I almost finished mine.

Us, Huge Ass Beers and some random

I can’t remember why this guy thought it was cool to wear an NC State hoodie in the middle of VT Tech and Michigan fans but his wife was wearing UM gear so I let it go. The picture below gives a little better perspective on the actual size of our beers.

Even though the Sugar Bowl is what brought us to New Orleans, it was my least favorite part. The SuperDome is nothing special. We had seats in the upper level. The seats and stairs were extremely steep. It made me a little uncomfortable and we stuck with pop and popcorn for the night. The game was kind of boring. There were way too many commercial timeouts so it was hard to get into the game. Neither team played very well. I was a little let down but the rest of the vacation was so much fun I’d actually forgotten about the game until now.

G sitting with all the UM fans

I think the coolest part about Michigan playing Virginia Tech was that New Orleans was packed full of people from Michigan and Virginia. It was like I was back in both of my former homes. It was so easy to strike up conversations with random people.

We did get some sober sightseeing in the day before we left. It warmed up a little for us so we just wandered the streets. It’s easy to forget which way is north and which way is south in NOLA. I actually read before we got there that they don’t even use those for directions. Instead they say river side or lake side. Once you’re there, it’s pretty obvious why they do that.

So much to see, eat, and drink in New Orleans. Hopefully out next trip there will be for Mardi Gras! Happy Paczki Day everyone!

Loving NW winter

If only we could get that crane out of the way. It’s been unseasonably warm and sunny the last few days. Almost hit a record high on Friday. Feeling very fortunate these days!

Biggest Seattle snowfall since 1985 in the forecast

17 Jan

Here’s the big headline for today in the great Northwest. Of course our first winter in Seattle will produce record snowfall…

Biggest Seattle snowfall since 1985 in the forecast.

If it really happens, I will be sure to post pictures of bin sledding.
